Introduction The worldwide growth of e-commerce has been well documented. The US continues to be a major player with 3.6 per cent of total retail sales occurring online in the first quarter of 2009 (US Census Bureau 2009). Even in the face of current worldwide economic downturn, e-commerce appears to be holding strong. While total retail sales in the US in the first quarter of 2009 declined by 10.2 per cent over the first quarter of 2008, online sales decreased only by 5.4 per cent for the same period of comparison. Further, US online sales grew slightly between the last quarter of 2008 and the first quarter of 2009 while overall retail sales declined for the same period (ibid). The global economy and the economies of individual countries other than the United States are also finding that e-commerce is an important and rapidly growing sector as well. The United Kingdom experienced a 30 per cent growth in online sales in 2007 alone (UK Office of National Statistics 2008).
